# Keycap Profiles for Brands: What Cherry, OEM, SA, and XDA Cost You in Production

Every buying guide on the internet will tell you how Cherry, OEM, SA, and XDA keycaps feel under your fingers. Almost none of them tell you what that choice does to your tooling budget, your sampling timeline, and your defect rate. This guide is the factory-side version: what actually changes on the production floor when your brand picks a profile.

## The four profiles in one minute

A “profile” is the three-dimensional shape of a keycap — its height, the angle of its top surface, and whether that shape changes from row to row. Four profiles dominate the market:

That last column is where brands should start paying attention, because each of those rows implies a different manufacturing reality.

## Why profile choice is a tooling decision

Keycaps are injection-molded. Every distinct keycap shape — every width, every row variant — needs its own mold or mold cavity. A full sculpted keycap set is not one mold; it is a family of molds covering roughly a dozen or more distinct shapes, each cut to tight tolerances so legends, stems, and top-surface angles come out consistent.

That is why profile selection, which looks like a design decision on a product page, is actually one of the biggest cost levers in a custom keycap project:

- **Using an existing, proven mold family** means you pay for material, machine time, legends, and QC — not new tooling. Sampling is fast because the molds are already dialed in.

- **Requesting a new or uncommon profile** means commissioning new molds. Depending on how many unique shapes your layout needs, tooling becomes the dominant cost of the project and adds weeks or months before the first sample exists. The practical question is therefore not “which profile do I like?” but “which profile can my project afford?” Here is how the four profiles compare on the floor.

## Cherry: the enthusiast default

Cherry profile is lower and more aggressively sculpted than OEM, and it became the enthusiast standard largely because GMK built its reputation on it. Today it is the most requested profile in group buys and premium custom sets.

**Factory view:** demand created supply. Because so many brands have ordered Cherry profile over the years, established factories maintain mature Cherry mold families with well-understood process parameters — shrinkage behavior, gate positions, legend alignment. Sampling a Cherry set from existing molds is typically the fastest path from design file to physical keycaps.

**Watch out for:** “Cherry profile” is a shape, not a quality grade. Two factories can both offer Cherry profile and deliver very different consistency in wall thickness, texture, and legend sharpness. ## OEM: the volume workhorse

OEM profile is what ships on most pre-built keyboards worldwide. It is medium-tall, sculpted by row, and instantly familiar to any user who has ever touched a keyboard.

**Factory view:** OEM has the largest installed mold base on the planet. If your project needs hundreds of thousands of sets, OEM profile offers the deepest pool of available machine capacity and the most competitive per-set pricing, simply because every factory in the industry runs it constantly.

**Watch out for:** precisely because OEM is the volume profile, it is also where the market is most crowded. If your brand’s differentiation depends on feel and acoustics, OEM’s taller, thinner-walled caps produce a different sound signature than Cherry — something to validate in samples before committing.

## SA: tall, sculpted, and unforgiving

SA is the tall, spherical-top profile behind many retro-styled sets. It has a devoted following and an unmistakable look.

**Factory view:** SA is a niche profile with far fewer available mold families, and tall keycaps are physically harder to mold well. More resin per cap means more shrinkage to control; tall walls are more prone to warping as the part cools; and the deep spherical tops demand careful texture control to avoid visible flow lines. Expect fewer factories to quote it, longer sampling cycles, and a higher defect-management burden during mass production.

**Watch out for:** SA’s height changes typing ergonomics significantly — it is a love-it-or-hate-it profile. For a first product, that narrows your addressable market on top of the manufacturing constraints.

## XDA: the uniform-profile cost hack

XDA (like its cousin DSA) is a uniform profile: every row uses the same cap shape, just in different widths.

**Factory view:** uniform profiles are the most tooling-efficient way to make a sculpted-looking custom set. Because rows are identical, the mold family covers fewer unique shapes than a sculpted set of the same layout. Fewer unique shapes means lower tooling exposure and simpler inventory of base caps for dye-sublimation. This is why XDA became the default for value-oriented custom sets.

**Watch out for:** uniform rows remove the ergonomic sculpt that helps fingers find home row. Enthusiast audiences are split on XDA for exactly this reason — it is a deliberate trade: production efficiency and clean aesthetics versus sculpted ergonomics.

## Profile interacts with material and legends

Profile choice does not happen in isolation — it compounds with your material and legend decisions:

- **Tall caps amplify material behavior.** PBT’s stiffness and heat resistance make it the standard for dye-sublimated sets, but PBT also warps more readily than ABS — and the taller the cap, the more warp control matters. - **Sculpt changes legend work.** Doubleshot legends require a second mold shot keyed to each cap’s exact top-surface angle — on sculpted profiles, that is per-row precision work. Dye-sublimation needs a flat-ish, consistent top surface, which behaves differently on SA’s deep spheres than on XDA’s gentle tops. ## Choosing a profile for your first production run

If we compress the factory experience into a decision order for a brand’s first custom set:

- **Validate demand for the shape first.** Profile preference is strong and personal. If your community is asking for SA, do not ship them XDA — but know you are choosing the harder production path.

- **Default to existing mold families.** Cherry and OEM offer the fastest sampling and lowest tooling risk. XDA offers the best tooling economics when uniform fits your design.

- **Budget SA only with committed demand.** Pre-orders or a successful interest check, because the tooling and QC burden is real.

- **Lock material and legends at the same time.** Profile, resin, and legend process are one decision, not three — changing one late re-opens the other two.
