Beyond the Urban Buzz
Guizhou’s modern face shines in cities like Guiyang and tech-driven Guanshanhu. Meanwhile, Maotai town thrives with its famous Baijiu. However, the countryside offers a different story. Far from urban hustle, rural Guizhou reveals stunning landscapes and rich culture. This journey explores vibrant villages, showcasing the real lives of ordinary Chinese people. Thus, it unveils a side of China often overlooked by global audiences.
Xijiang Qianhu: The Heart of Miao Culture
Welcome to Xijiang Qianhu, the world’s largest Miao village. Nestled in Leishan County’s mountains, it houses over 1,400 Miao households. Every rooftop and alley reflects tradition. The Miao, one of China’s 56 ethnic minorities, preserve a unique language and history. Moreover, the village is immaculate, with well-maintained wooden homes. Local and national efforts protect this heritage, blending infrastructure with tradition. Consequently, Xijiang feels like a living cultural treasure.

Rural China
Wuyang River: Nature’s Masterpiece
The Wuyang River scenic area spans 400 square kilometers. Its dramatic cliffs and emerald waters create a breathtaking view. Known as the “Natural Bonsai Gallery,” it stretches 95 kilometers from Jiuzhou to Moon Bay. Meanwhile, ecological efforts, including 12 wastewater treatment plants, have restored the river’s purity. For example, the rare peach blossom jellyfish has returned. Surprisingly, 5G connectivity thrives here, highlighting China’s rural infrastructure. Thus, the Wuyang blends nature and modernity seamlessly.
Zhenyuan: An Ancient Town Alive
Zhenyuan ancient town, dating to 202 BC, echoes with history. Its riverside alleys and stone bridges feel timeless. Moreover, a 5G tower stands proudly, blending old and new. Hotels here rival urban luxury, with balcony baths overlooking the river. The Qinglong Cave, a temple-fortress in the cliffs, showcases unique Miao and Dong architecture. Declared a National Historic and Cultural City in 1986, Zhenyuan thrives as a 5A tourist spot. Thus, it preserves its past while embracing the present.
Zhaoxing: Dong Heritage in Harmony
Zhaoxing Dong village, founded in 986 AD, is China’s largest Dong community. Over 5,200 residents maintain traditions spanning a millennium. Narrow stone paths and wooden homes create a handcrafted feel. Five towering drum towers symbolize clan unity. Locals still sing and celebrate here, keeping culture alive. As a National Historic and Cultural Village, Zhaoxing remains authentic. Tourists visit, but the village stays true to its roots. Consequently, it’s a vibrant slice of Dong life.

Guizhou countryside
Huanggang: A Forested Dong Haven
Huanggang Dong village lies in Shuanjiang’s forested hills. Covering 30 square kilometers with 68% forest coverage, it feels otherworldly. Traditional wooden homes and five drum towers define its skyline. A champion water buffalo, victor of local fights, is the town’s pride. The Dong people’s connection to their land and music shines through. Thus, Huanggang blends nature, craft, and culture, offering a glimpse into rural China’s depth.
